Located in the picturesque township of Cygnet in Southern Tasmania, St James Catholic College caters for the needs of approximately 300 students. The College is proud of its long-standing and well-respected relationship with the community.

We are currently seeking applications from dedicated, innovative and enthusiastic Teacher Assistants who are able to demonstrate a commitment to the aims and philosophy of Catholic Education.

About the Role

As a Teacher Assistant, you will play an important role in supporting students' learning, wellbeing, and engagement in the classroom. Working closely with teachers, you will help deliver educational programs, provide individual and small-group support, and contribute to creating a positive, inclusive, and safe learning environment. This rewarding role is ideal for someone who is passionate about education, enjoys working with children, and is committed to helping every student reach their full potential.

The successful applicant will support the Catholic Identity and Evangelising Mission of the college and work collaboratively with staff and the broader school community.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Support teachers in the delivery of classroom learning activities and educational programs.
  • Provide individual and small-group assistance to students to enhance learning outcomes and engagement.
  • Assist in creating and maintaining a safe, inclusive, and positive learning environment.
  • Support students' social, emotional, and behavioural development in line with school expectations.
  • Prepare, organise, and maintain classroom resources, materials, and learning spaces.
  • Contribute to student supervision during classroom activities, excursions, breaks, and other school events as required.

Required Skills, Experience and Attributes

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Committed to supporting student outcomes through a service orientation.
  • Able to relate to students with varying needs.
  • Able to interact appropriately with colleagues, students and parents for different purposes and in different contexts.
  • Able to apply literacy, numeracy and reasoning skills to effectively undertake role.
  • Able to perform effectively in environments with competing demands.
  • Able to exercise judgment and discretion in undertaking duties.
  • Able to use initiative to resolve problems and conflicts in a constructive manner.
  • Flexible and dependable.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Valid Working with Vulnerable People Registration
  • Accreditation A: Accreditation to work in a Catholic school or willingness to work towards
  • Current and satisfactory National Police Criminal History Check (NPCHC)

Desirable

  • Certificate 111 in Education Support
  • Education sector experience 
  • Current First Aid Certificate
